Key Understandings |
This session is fun, games & action aimed at introducing Kindy Kidz to making healthy food choices.
Students will meet Brainy the Dog and help him make decisions about which foods will make him a “Food Star” filling him with energy or a “Strong Bodz” providing strength & growth. They will also assist him to avoid foods that provide him with only “a little bit’ or energy!
At the conclusion of this session the students will have an understanding of:
- That most foods that provide energy are grown from the ground
- That foods that provide strength and growth come from animals (and there are some alternatives)
- That they should avoid the foods that are filled with sugar, fat & salt because they only provide “a little bit” of energy
- How to make a healthy food choice

Students go on a highly interactive journey through the digestive system discovering the pathway of how food enters the blood to provide energy. With the aid of the Healthy Food Pyramid, the fun is in the discovery of which foods - simple or complex carbohydrates - provide long lasting energy that gets us through the day. |

At the conclusion of this session the students will have an understanding of:
- how the digestive system works to provide fuel for the body
- the major digestive organs including; the oesophagus, stomach, and the small and large intestines
- appropriate food choices can be made using the Healthy Food Pyramid
- how food provides energy for everyday activities
- how simple carbohydrates provide short bursts of energy
- how complex carbohydrates provide energy which is released over a long period of time providing longer lasting energy

This action packed session introduces Brainy the Dog and the nervous system, focusing on the brain and the five senses of taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell. Students discover which foods provide the most brain power and energy using the Healthy Food Pyramid. |

- how the nervous system works
- the components of the nervous system - the brain, spinal cord and nerves
- personal hygiene skills
- how foods can be sorted according to their source
- how certain foods according to the Healthy Food Pyramid provide more brain power than others

This activity based, interactive session focuses on a variety of issues that have an influence on our health including; food choices, physical activity, body types and decision making. Students will have a greater awareness of the various ingredients in foods and how reading labels empowers students to make healthier lifelong choices. This program also has a drug education component focusing on alcohol and nicotine and the effects on the body. |

- why it is important to have a balanced metabolism
